Hello, lovely humans! I come to you today bringing a tag. Just a tag. Not a book tag. Don't attack me.
I found this adorable tag over at Seven Roses. It's not a blog I follow, I kind of just googled "Fall tags," and that's where I ended up. However, the blog is super cozy and sweet. I intend to do some frolicking through its pages once I finish writing this post.
1- Favorite thing about Autumn?
I tend to be a rather chilly human, even at peak summer. So you may be asking, what business do I have loving Autumn so damn much? Great question. I don't know. It could be self-sabotage (Cue Beastie Boys), or it could simply be that the season gives me all of the excuses I need to drink hot drinks (coffee) all day long whilst bundled up in a fluffy blanket or oversized sweater.
The leaves also make me pretty happy. I grew up with a Dalmatian named Sparky. Sparky was at peak happiness sitting on the front porch with my family during Fall. He had a very peculiar love for peanuts. We'd get a big bag from the local farmers market, and sit on the porch shelling and eating peanuts. Here and there, we'd toss one to Sparky. No matter how old and tired he was. he would always jump up to catch them in his mouth. When we weren't eating peanuts, Sparky was known to chase after the leaves on the ground, thinking they were the papery insides of peanut shells. To this day, bits of Autumn leaves crunching underfoot bring me back to fond memories of my childhood friend.
2- Spooky Autumn or cozy Autumn?
I think it's rude that I am expected to choose. The law of the land says it is Spoopy fall until Halloween. Afterwards, we transition into cozy fall with baked goods, plaid, and STUFFING! Both Spoopy fall and cozy fall are integral to my happiness. You may not rush one or the other.
3- Haunted house or Halloween party?
I haven't really ever done either. I'm more of the stay-in-with-Halloween-movie type. I don't really thrive when there's a high volume of people around me.
4- Carve pumpkins or paint pumpkins?
Carving pumpkins is the correct answer. You can't roast fresh pumpkin seeds without carving those bad boys up! Let's be honest here, the pumpkin seeds are the real reason we are buying pumpkins in the first place... right? Someone drop hints to my human that I haven't ever been to a pumpkin patch...
5- Go apple picking or go on a hay ride?
Apple picking. I'm sorry, but hay rides are slow, chilly, and allergy-inducing. Apple picking provides the goods for autumnal culinary perfection a la apple pies, tarts, cider, coffee cakes, donuts, fresh salads, crumbles, strudels, etc.
6- Pumpkin spice lattes or mulled apple cider?
Nothing against pumpkin spice, but I just can't get behind it. I do enjoy cider, but particularly for its pairing with rye. The superior warm liquid-based good for Autumn is SOUP! I've already made two this month. I am thriving.
7- What did you dress up for Halloween last year?
Remember how I just said I haven't really been to a Halloween party? Yeah... costumes have kind of fizzled out with that. I am trying to have a little costume party within my household this year, so I'll keep you posted!
8- Falling rain or a crackling fireplace?
That's a hard one. I'll save the fireplace for Winter, and pick rain. There's nothing cozier than reading by a window while a thunderstorm is raging outside. It is blissful.
9- Have you purchased any fall decor yet?
I'm trying to keep myself from buying up a bunch of fall decor until I am out of college and living in a more permanent home. That being said, I did buy a cute paper mache pumpkin to paint, and a big autumnal bowl to put out Halloween candy in. Us depressed college kids need our Reese's. (Reese's are the superior chocolate. You may not reference anything else.)
10- Favorite photo that you took last fall?
It's a simple photo, but it's home to me.
11- Favorite Autumn-themed movie?
As this says "Autumn" rather than "Halloween," my answer will be Dead Poets Society. I can't really explain it, but this movie feels like fall. If you have somehow never witnessed this masterpiece, please go fix that.
12- Favorite color to wear in Autumn?
I tend to wear earthy or neutral tones all year round, but I think my fall wardrobe contains more olive green hues than normal. Honestly, my wardrobe doesn't really change that much though.
13- Favorite Autumn-themed book?
A short list of books I love that give me Autumnal vibes:
Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and The Last American Vampire by Seth Grahame-Smith (I don't know why I love these books so much, but I really really do.)
The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
Locke and Key series by Joe Hill
Coraline by Neil Gaiman
The Book Thief by Markus Zuzak
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Anything by H.G. Wells
Also anything by Ray Bradbury
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Classics, as a blanket statement
14- Best way to spend a rainy day?
Reading with Stella. Alternative response: making soup.
15- Favorite Autumn food?
Okay, okay, I'll stop talking about soup. My brain goes next to Thanksgiving feasts. My next answer has got to be stuffing. Nothing hits quite like Thanksgiving leftovers. Yummy!
16- Favorite Autumn quote?
"Notice that autumn is more the season of the soul than nature."
- Friedrich Nietzche
17- Favorite Autumn leaf?
It's not a particular leaf or color that makes autumn leaves so breathtaking to me. It's more the magical feeling you get driving down a backroad, and there's a myriad of colors whizzing by on either side of you. I just love it!
18- Favorite Autumn activity?
I want to say "read," but I do that all year long. I'd have to say then that it is hiking in the crisp air. It always feels as if you are stepping into another world entirely.
19- Favorite Autumn scent?
I am a huge fan of baked-goods inspired scents. In fall, I particularly gravitate towards things like apple pies, maple, cinnamon, marshmallow, or coffee. I also tend to enjoy anything smoky, like a firepit, tobacco, or whiskey.
20- Is your birthday in Autumn?
Yes! I was mere hours late of being born on Halloween. My birthday is November 1st. I think this may be the ultimate reason for my connection and affections for the season.
